Abiding in Jesus

Abiding in Jesus

Jesus said," I am the true vine, and My Father is the husbandman. Every branch in Me that beareth not fruit He taketh away; and every branch that beareth fruit, He purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the Word which I have spoken unto you. “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, no more can ye, unless ye abide in Me. “I am the vine, ye are the branches. He that abideth in Me and I in Him, the same bringeth forth much fruit, for without Me ye can do nothing.
If a man abide not in Me, he is cast forth as a branch and is withered; and men gather them and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is My Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be My disciples.

“As the Father hath loved Me, so have I loved you. Continue ye in My love. If ye keep My commandments, ye shall abide in My love, even as I have kept My Father’s commandments, and abide in His love. These things have I spoken unto you, that My joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. “This is My commandment: that ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are My friends if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants, for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard of My Father, I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit and that your fruit should remain, that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in My name, He may give it to you. These things I command you, that ye love one another. John 15:1-17

Jesus is the true vine. As branches are joined to vine and depend upon it for its nourishment and livelihood we too must look only to Him. "Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. " Heb 12:2 Our only source of life and strength is our union with Jesus. Jesus said, “If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink. " John 7:37

This life giving union with our Lord has an eternal purpose. He desires that we bring forth fruit. He says that as we remain in Him he will prune us which will enable us to bring forth more fruit. This pruning process is not an easy journey for some people who get stuck in their lives by old habits and addictions but it is necessary that these old things pass away and all things become new as we mature.

The pruning that God does in our lives is not optional. Its necessary even though it may not feel pleasant for us at the time. Oftentimes, it will hurt but it just means that He is removing the things and people from our lives who will hinder us and keep us from being unfruitful. Sometimes you will see a cutting off of old relationships or habits or mindsets. This is the Lord working in our lives.

Abiding in Jesus

"For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us]. Ephes 2:10 When we bring forth much fruit our Heavenly Father is pleased and glorified in our lives.

Abiding in Jesus is fundamental to all levels of fruitfulness in our lives. If we do not abide then we will simply wither and die spiritually. How do we abide in Him? He said "If ye abide in Me, and My words abide in you" John 15:7
It is the words of Jesus that we must hold close in our hearts that will enable us to live in Him. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Cor 4:6

“It is written: ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God." Luke 4:4
We are able to abide in Him through meditating on the word of God but also through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. "If Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. " Rom 8:10

As the branch cannot live without flowing sap neither can we live without the Spirit of Life. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. Gal 6:8 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the holy Spirit to them that ask Him?” Luke 11:13 If you have not received the infilling of the Holy Spirit to help you all you have to do is ask Jesus. "But the Comforter, who is the Holy Ghost whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." John 14:26
As we prosper through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit we can partake in everlasting life now. The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand. He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him. John 3:35-36.

Abiding in Him demands that we abide in His love. Our love relationship must be cultivated and guarded. Jesus said "If ye keep My commandments, ye shall abide in My love, even as I have kept My Father’s commandments, and abide in His love. " John 15:10 For this is the love of God: that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not grievous. 1 John 5:3

Abiding in Jesus

We are called to be like unto Him in personality and actions. "But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God ' Jude 1:20 In order to keep ourselves in the love of God it requires action, obedience and alertness from us. Allowing any hatred, anger, jealousy, envy or strife to remain in our hearts means that we are not able to abide in His love.
How then do we keep ourselves in His Love? There is a law of love which is based entirely upon grace. Jesus instructed us when he said "This is My commandment: that ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:12-13
Jesus said "I am the Good Shepherd; the Good Shepherd giveth His life for the sheep." John 10:11

We are to be a community of forgiven ones who are to continually practice the presence of a forgiving attitude. Being fruitful depends on us remaining in Him and He in us. Fruitfulness is not working for the Lord but allowing Him to live and do His mighty works through us. "I say unto you, he that believeth in Me, the works that I do he shall do also; and greater works than these shall he do, because I go unto My Father." John 14:12
